We just had our first Eagle Ceremony at the Cahoon Center last
Sunday for Levi Callahan of Troop 2880. Some of the helpers came
out Sunday morning and set everything up, put up signs at the
camp entrance and parking lot. One of the troop members came out
several hours before, set up some propane grills behind the Cahoon Center and prepared mini-venison shish-ka-bobs The
ceremony started at 2:00PM and lasted about an hour. Displays
were set up inside so that everyone could look them over while
they were in line to get refreshments at the tables along the
back wall. After going through the line the guests were seated
both inside and outside the Cahoon Center. There is a restroom
inside the Cahoon Center and a handicapped parking pad on the
west side of the building. Wheelchair folks have easy access
from the cement parking pad directly onto the cement of the
pavilion wing and directly into the building if preferred.

Thanks to all of
your efforts and the efforts of your scouts, leaders and
families, we had an increase in food collected this year! What a
tremendous way to serve our communities and in a simple way,
teach our scouts that when our individual volunteer efforts are
added to the efforts of others, we can achieve amazing results.
There are messages from a few folks at the food bank that are
worth sharing with your unit’s below. Finally, I ask that you
and your unit’s consider a can drive, as part of your holiday
Pack Meetings and Courts of Honor. The cans can be taken to a
local food pantry or placed in a purple box in front of any
Martin’s grocery store. The can drive is a great way to do a
good turn for the holidays. Thank you again for making Scouting
For Food 2010 a success!
Please visit our
New Survey page which will be used to
link you up with Arrohattoc District Surveys which we hope will
allow us to strengthen your scouting program.
A
Scout's word can be Trusted!
The success from our Friends of Scouting Campaign
is not measured by how much we pledge but by how much we deliver
against what was pledged. Please don’t forget to honor those
FOS pledges!
Lost your statement? The Council can inform you
of your pledge amount and can assist you by paying on-line or in
the Scout Shop if you are downtown. Better yet, give your check
to Marcus Ragland next time you’re at Roundtable.
Have unexpected money problems hit the family
wallet? These things unfortunately happen to anyone at a
moment’s notice and we understand your family comes first. In
these cases, all we can ask is that any amount that you can
honor with your pledge is most appreciated. Every dollar really
counts.

Historic Merit Badges
The BSA officially released
the requirements and information on the four Historic Merit
Badges (Carpentry, Pathfinding, Signaling, and Tracking) today,
April, 1, 2010. Scouts may work on them now, but must complete
them by December 31, 2010, if they wish to use them for rank
advancement.
Included in the release are copies of merit badge pamphlets
(from 1927, 1928, 1940, and 1942) available for download and
additional background information for Scouts working on the
badges.
The US Scouting Service Project has provided information on the
badges on the US Scouting Service Project website, and included
links to the information on BSA's site, too.
A worksheet for Carpentry is already available. They hope to

‘Twas the Night before a
Modern Christmas – 2009 Arrohattoc Program Report
‘Twas the night before Christmas and all
through the house
The only sound I could hear was the click of my mouse
I was working on e-mail while eating a backpacker’s snack
Mountain House Tetrazzini with Monterey Jack
When down from the chimney there arose such a clatter
I spun in my chair to see what was the matter
The glass doors on my fireplace flew wide apart
Causing me to say, “OMG that’s sick” with a start
There covered in soot and wincing in pain
Sat a jolly ol’ elf we all know as Mac Drane
“Your front door was locked”, he said with a grin
Can you give me a hand, I bruised my right shin
“NP”, I replied, but here’s a hint just for you
You’re a little too big for a gas fireplace flue
I hoisted him up and gave him a drink
He looked at the Red Bull and said “Thank you… I think”
“I have a District report, he proclaimed, “but no fear
The Arrohattoc Program Team had a great year”
He then paused as he looked at the food on my plate
I offered to share but he said, “no thanks – I just ate”
“Dried Tetrazzini?” he added with a mumble
“Myself, I prefer the Raspberry Crumble”
He went on to say “I’ve got good news to report”
And continued to talk with no chance to retort
“Where should I begin?” he scrunched up his face
“The beginning I guess, with the Cub’s Derby Race
Angela saw to it that everyone had great fun
The scouts were all winners, absolutely bar none
As for the district dinner, Camelot was the theme
Your costume in the skit made Sylvia and Cameron scream
Kathy and the training team had another banner year
Attendance records were set in ‘09… I hear they served beer
Don Vaught and John McCullough were also quite nifty
The Eagle review count was greater than fifty
This year the Fall Fishing Fun Day took a new twist
New volunteers stepped up, but Joe’s presence was missed
Scouting for Food… bags in and bags out
Rob is our champion, I say with no doubt
And Rob’s contribution gets even better
He also produces the Drumbeat newsletter
Summer is not summer without Scouting Day Camp
JC Thompson’s amazing and to the kids he’s a champ
Freddy, Tammy and Glenn led the Go-Green Camporee
That evening the drummers and glow sticks were all we could see
Our new web page came forward from Agent Chigger Jim
Kay Padgett updated the schedule working closely with him
I would be remiss not to mention our monthly Roundtable
A new format came forward; Marian used all who were able
I can’t possibly list all events from the year
Jim Richard’s alone are too much to hear
Air cover was provided by the Committee’s Key Three
Without their leadership, who knows where we’d be
If I left anyone out, it is simply my bad
We appreciate your help, so please don’t be mad
Now don’t get too comfy, don’t shift to low gear
You’re expected to raise the bar even higher next year”
He then stood up to leave, this time choosing the door
As he parted he said, “I’ve also heard recent lore…
A good source has told me new units were started
Marcus was thrilled and Brad was faint hearted
The new Crew 00 is staffed by folks we all know
Good luck come next June, It’ll be a great show!”
Then I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight
“Happy Scouting to all, and to all a good night”
WHAT CAN YOU SAY?
There is nothing you can say
except WOW! What an amazing performance that the
Arrohattoc Players did. We are sorry it took so long to
put this on the WEB but it took awhile getting all converted.

NATIONAL NEWS!
Today, our National Executive Board took another significant
step toward establishing a permanent home for future national
jamborees and creating another premier outdoor adventure
Scouting site. The board approved the purchase of more than
10,000 acres of some of the most spectacular land you've ever
seen. It's located in the New River Gorge area of West
Virginia-an area that offers some of the best rock climbing,
whitewater rafting, and mountain biking anywhere in the country.
It is a perfect site for the full complement of activities we
intend to offer at our new facility: extreme sports, leadership
training, camping, high adventure-anything you can imagine doing
in the great outdoors, and, of course, the national jamboree.
We still have a lot of work to do, but under Jack Furst's
tremendous leadership, we are well on our way toward going from
vision to reality. As Jack said to board members, "We are only
limited by our own creativity and ingenuity." And as we know,
with Jack at the helm, that means there are no limits to
what we can accomplish through this effort
Stay tuned for further details and a formal unveiling of our
plans in November. Until then, my sincerest thanks to the team
for its tireless efforts in bringing this exceptional
opportunity to our Scouting family. It is, truly, one of the
best investments we will make in serving Scouts for the next 100
years.
Scouting For Food
Everyone did a FANTASTIC job with Scouting
for Food in the district. I am not going to go into
details by the area in the district, but I will tell you that in
two of the areas they both collected 5,000 pounds more this year
than last year. We can all be very proud of the more than
53,000 pounds of food collected.
If you have any
information for your Unit, Troop, or Venture Crew that
you would like to submit for placement on the Arrohattoc
District site,
please contact us today and your
submission will be considered.
